Four types of brush, four jobs

You don’t need all four. Which brush suits your dog depends not on the breed but on the coat: loosening knots, brushing through, removing undercoat or adding shine. Most dogs need just one or two.

The order

Brushing isn’t a tool, it’s a routine. Depending on the coat, your dog needs two to four of these steps, but always in this order.

  1. 1
    Undercoat rake
    Only with undercoat

Rake: out with the loose undercoat

In shedding season the undercoat dies off and gets caught between the guard hairs. The rake pulls it out before it mats. On a dry coat, in the direction of growth, without pressure. Poodles, Doodles, Maltese and Cotons skip this step.

  2. 2
    Slicker brush
    For medium-length coats and longer

    Slicker: loosen knots and undercoat

Fine, bent pins reach under the topcoat. Hold the coat up with your free hand, brush the bottom layer, then let the next one down. Short strokes, no pressure. Pin length by coat length: 11, 20 or 25 mm.

  3. 3
    Pin brush
    The daily brush-through

Pin brush: brush through and smooth

Long pins with rounded tips lay the detangled coat in the direction of growth and massage the skin. For long coats, this step alone is often enough between slicker sessions.

  4. 4
    Natural bristle brush
To finish, the only step for short coats

    Shine: natural bristle to finish

Boar bristle and horsehair pick up dust and spread the skin’s natural oils from root to tip. The coat lies flat and shines. For a Labrador, Beagle or Pug, that is all the grooming needed.

The three most common mistakes
  • Pressure. A brush rests on its own weight. Red skin means: too much pressure or pins that are too long.
  • Only skimming the surface. Smooth the topcoat but leave the undercoat behind, and you get mats at the skin.
  • Raking when wet. Rake and slicker brush belong on a dry coat. Wet undercoat mats when you pull it.

Wir lieben diese Bürste!! Mega Produkt...

The maker

It all began with a poodle called Kika

Kika was the first dog of Janita J. Plungė, the founder of the Kika Group, to which Tauro Pro Line belongs. Her love for Kika became a profession: for over 35 years, Janita has been breeding and grooming Bichons Frisés, Maltese and Pomeranians.

Because nothing in the salon was good enough for her, she developed her own line. Every brush comes from that hands-on experience.

Frequently asked questions

Which brush do I need first?
For medium-length coats and longer, a slicker brush; for short coats, a natural bristle or horsehair brush. The four brush types above lead you to the right page with a finder.
What is the difference between a slicker brush and a pin brush?
The slicker brush loosens knots and undercoat with fine, dense pins. The pin brush smooths the detangled coat with longer, thicker pins with rounded tips. Slicker first, then pin brush.
What does Prestige Collection mean?
The wooden brushes from Tauro Pro Line in pear and beech wood, crafted in Germany. You’ll find them among the pin brushes and the natural bristle brushes, where they have their own filter.
Soft or firm for the plastic slicker brushes?
Soft for cats, puppies and sensitive skin. Firm only for dense undercoat. On the curved brush you can tell by the colour: purple and pink are soft, turquoise is firm.
Are the brushes suitable for cats?
Yes. For cats, the round wooden slicker brush, the mini slicker brush or the Prestige wooden pin brush; for short-haired cats, the horsehair brush.
How fast is delivery?
Within Germany in 1 to 2 days, as all brushes are in stock with us. Free shipping from €49.
Can I return a brush?
Yes, you have a 14-day right of withdrawal. For hygiene reasons we can’t take back brushes that show signs of use, so only try it on the coat once you’re sure.
Where are the brushes made?
The Prestige Collection in Germany, all others by KIKA LT in Kaunas, Lithuania, the manufacturer behind Tauro Pro Line.
