Pins and firmness

Two numbers that decide whether a brush suits the coat.

Pin length: 25 mm

The length depends on the coat length. Short pins (11 mm) work close to the skin, for short to medium-length coats and detail areas. Medium pins (16 to 22 mm) for medium-length and curly coats. Long pins (25 to 35 mm) reach through dense, long coats into the undercoat.

Firmness: soft

Soft pins bend under pressure: for puppies, thin skin and fine coats. Firm pins hold up under pressure and work their way through dense undercoat. At Tauro Pro Line, the firmness is printed on the packaging as “Pins Solidity”. If in doubt, choose soft.

The bars compare Tauro Pro Line brushes with each other: one bar is the gentlest (11 mm soft, wooden pins), five the firmest. They say nothing about other brands.

For which coat

long, dense coats with undercoat. Typical breeds: Golden Retriever, Flat-Coated Retriever, Collie, Sheltie, Bernese Mountain Dog, Newfoundland, Bobtail, Tibetan Terrier, Afghan Hound, Maine Coon, Persian cat.

    Product description

    What the brush does

The curved wooden slicker brush from Tauro Pro Line is the ideal brush for long, thick coats. The 25 mm extra-long stainless steel pins reach through the topcoat into the undercoat, removing loose hair and knots that 11 mm or 20 mm pins cannot reach. The head is curved outward to follow the contours of the body—this is the shape professional groomers use for working on the backs, flanks, and haunches of long-haired breeds.

The curved head and the long pins

With a curved head, only a portion of the pins makes contact at any given time, while the rest follows the body’s curvature. This distributes pressure, prevents scratching the skin, and ensures the long pins only penetrate as deep as the contour allows. The elastic cushion provides additional give. The pins are angled at 135° and feature an anti-static coating. The handle is made of hardwood with a rubberized color coating.

    Which size to choose

S (6.1 x 19 cm) narrow head for small long-haired dogs, legs, and haunches. M (9.6 x 19 cm) for medium-sized dogs of around 10 to 25 kg; this is the standard size. L (9.6 x 22 cm) with a longer head for large dogs and larger areas. Turquoise is only available in size M.

    Who it is for

Golden and Flat Coated Retrievers, Collies, Shelties, Bernese Mountain Dogs, Newfoundlands, Old English Sheepdogs, Tibetan Terriers, Afghans, Maine Coons, and Persians. For fine fur or sensitive skin, the 25 mm pins are too long; in such cases, the rectangular wooden slicker brush with 11 mm pins is the right choice.

    Usage and care

    • On dry or slightly damp fur, preferably with a little detangling spray beforehand.
    • Layer by layer: Hold the coat up with your free hand, brush the bottom layer, then let the next layer down. This allows the 25 mm pins to reach the skin everywhere.
    • In the direction of growth and without pressure. Long pins used with pressure will scratch the skin; this is the most common mistake when using slicker brushes.
    • Tough knots should be loosened with your fingers or a dematting tool; do not rip through them with the slicker brush.
    • Cleaning: Pull out the hair; wipe clean with a damp cloth if necessary and store in a dry place. Do not submerge the wood in water.

    A good fit if …

    • your dog has long, thick fur with an undercoat – Retriever, Collie, Sheltie, Bernese Mountain Dog, Newfoundland
    • your cat has long fur – Maine Coon, Persian, Norwegian Forest Cat
    • you want to remove undercoat from the topcoat during shedding season
    • you are looking for the curved professional shape with a wooden handle

Better a different tool if …

    • the fur is fine or short or the skin is sensitive – then 25 mm is too long, use the rectangular one with 11 mm
    • you are brushing a puppy or a short-haired cat
    • the fur already has solid mats – use a detangler to loosen those first
    • the skin is irritated or injured

    What makes this brush special

    Wooden slicker, domed head, S/M/L
Angled stainless steel pins in the cushion of the slicker brush
    Pins at a 135° angle

The pins are angled and unground at the tip. They reach under the topcoat, separate the hair and loosen loose undercoat and early knots without cutting.

Slicker brush following the body’s shape on the hind leg
    Flexible cushion

The cushion under the pins gives way over bony edges. The pressure spreads out and the skin isn’t scratched, even at the armpits, ribs and hind legs.

Freshly brushed dog with a smooth coat
    Antistatic

The pins are coated, so the coat doesn’t build up static while brushing. No frizz, no flyaways, the coat lies flat after brushing.

    How to brush properly

    Four steps · five minutes

Always on a dry or slightly damp coat, always in the direction of hair growth, always without pressure. Let the brush rest on the coat under its own weight and keep your wrist relaxed.

    Step 1
    Start dry or slightly damp

On a dry or slightly dampened coat, ideally with a little detangling spray. Wet hair stretches and breaks more easily.

Layer by layer AIImage optimised or generated with AI
    Step 2
    Layer by layer

Hold the coat up with your free hand, brush the bottom layer, then let the next one fall. That way the 25 mm pins reach the skin everywhere.

With the direction of growth, no pressure AIImage optimised or generated with AI
    Step 3
With the direction of growth, no pressure

Long pins used with pressure scratch the skin – the most common mistake with slickers. The brush rests on its own weight; the curve does the rest.

Open knots with your fingers AIImage optimised or generated with AI
    Step 4
    Open knots with your fingers

Tease tight knots apart with your fingers first or open them with a dematting tool. Ripping through them with the slicker brush hurts and breaks the hair.

    Frequently asked questions

    Which size do I need?

S (6.1 x 19 cm) with a narrow head for small long-haired dogs, legs and trousers. M (9.6 x 19 cm) for medium-sized dogs of around 10 to 25 kg – the standard size. L (9.6 x 22 cm) with a longer head for large dogs and large areas.

Are all sizes available in both colours?

Purple comes in S, M and L, turquoise only in M. The colour has no effect on the pins.

    Why 25 mm pins?

Only long pins reach through a dense topcoat down into the undercoat. On fine or short coats they are too long and scratch – then the rectangular wooden slicker brush with 11 mm pins is the right choice.

Curved or large – how does it differ from the large wooden slicker brush?

Both have 25 mm pins. The curved one adapts to the body’s contour and spreads the pressure. The large one (27 x 10 cm) is flat and covers more area per stroke – for very large dogs, where area matters more than fit.

    How often?

Five minutes a day for long coats, and thoroughly layer by layer during shedding season. Before that, the undercoat rake removes the bulk of the undercoat.

How do I care for the brush?

Pull out the hair, wipe with a damp cloth if needed and store dry. Do not immerse the wood in water.

    The maker

It all began with a poodle called Kika

Kika was the first dog of Janita J. Plungė, the founder of the Kika Group, to which Tauro Pro Line belongs. Her love for Kika became a profession: for over 35 years, Janita has been breeding and grooming Bichons Frisés, Maltese and Pomeranians.

Because nothing in the salon was good enough for her, she developed her own line. Every brush comes from that hands-on experience.
