After the slicker, the pin brush smooths the coat. For double coats in shedding season, the undercoat rake comes first.

Three things decide

Pin length, firmness and head shape. Everything else is a matter of taste.

Three curved slicker brushes in profile with 11, 20 and 25 mm pins

Pin length by coat length

The pins have to reach the skin: 11 mm for short coats and the face, 20 mm for curly coats like those of Poodles and Doodles, 25 mm for long, dense coats.

Curved slicker brushes in purple, pink and turquoise

Soft or firm

Soft means: the pins flex and are gentle on the skin, for puppies, cats and sensitive dogs. Firm means: the pins stay rigid and get through dense undercoat. Purple and pink are soft, turquoise is firm. All wooden brushes are soft.

Four slicker brushes: curved, flat, round and mini head

Curved, flat, round, mini

Curved follows the body’s shape, ideal for back and flanks. Flat for even areas, round for face and paws, mini for beard and toes.

How to brush correctly

Four steps, two to four of them depending on the coat. Always on a dry or slightly damp coat, always in the direction of growth, always without pressure. The slicker brush is step 2.

Slicker brush
Step 2

Slicker, layer by layer

Hold the coat up with your free hand, brush the bottom layer, then let the next one down. Short strokes in the direction of growth, no pressure. Tease firm knots apart with your fingers.

The three most common mistakes
  • Pressure. A brush rests on its own weight. Red skin after brushing means: too much pressure or pins that are too long.
  • Only skimming the surface. Smooth the topcoat but leave the undercoat behind, and you get mats at the skin. Layer by layer, right down to the skin.
  • Raking when wet. Rake and slicker brush belong on a dry coat. Wet undercoat mats when you pull it.

Wir lieben diese Bürste!! Mega Produkt...

The maker

It all began with a poodle called Kika

Kika was the first dog of Janita J. Plungė, the founder of the Kika Group, to which Tauro Pro Line belongs. Her love for Kika became a profession: for over 35 years, Janita has been breeding and grooming Bichons Frisés, Maltese and Pomeranians.

Because nothing in the salon was good enough for her, she developed her own line. Every brush comes from that hands-on experience.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I use the slicker?
Two to three times a week for medium-length coats, five minutes a day for long coats. Thorough and less often beats a quick daily skim.
Does a slicker brush scratch the skin?
Only with pressure. The brush rests on its own weight, your wrist stays relaxed. If the skin is red after brushing, the pressure was too high or the pins too long for the coat.
Soft or firm if I’m not sure?
Soft. Firm pins are only worth it with dense undercoat, and you can tell by whole tufts coming out in shedding season.
Wood or plastic?
They work the same. Wood is lighter, gives a better grip and lasts longer; plastic is cheaper and unaffected by moisture.
Which pin length for my dog?
11 mm for short to medium-length coats and detail areas, 20 mm for medium-length and curly coats, 25 mm for long, dense coats with undercoat.
Is a slicker brush enough on its own?
For medium-length coats, yes. For long coats, add a pin brush for smoothing; for lots of undercoat in shedding season, use the undercoat rake first.
Can I use the brush on a wet coat?
On a slightly damp coat with a little detangling spray, yes; on a wet coat, no. Wet hair stretches and breaks more easily.
How do I clean the brush?
Pull the hair out by hand or with a comb, wipe with a damp cloth if needed and store dry. Don’t dip wooden brushes in water.

Slicker brush, dematting brush, detangling brush: one and the same tool

What groomers call a slicker is sold as a slicker brush, dematting brush, detangling brush or dog brush with stainless steel pins. It always means the brush with a dense field of fine, bent pins on a flexible cushion. Tauro Pro Line makes it in seven versions for dogs and cats, from the pocket-sized mini slicker to the 27 cm wide wooden brush for Newfoundlands.
