Pins and firmness

Two numbers that decide whether a brush suits the coat.

Pin length: 25 mm

The length depends on the coat length. Short pins (11 mm) work close to the skin, for short to medium-length coats and detail areas. Medium pins (16 to 22 mm) for medium-length and curly coats. Long pins (25 to 35 mm) reach through dense, long coats into the undercoat.

Firmness: soft

Soft pins bend under pressure: for puppies, thin skin and fine coats. Firm pins hold up under pressure and work their way through dense undercoat. At Tauro Pro Line, the firmness is printed on the packaging as “Pins Solidity”. If in doubt, choose soft.

The bars compare Tauro Pro Line brushes with each other: one bar is the gentlest (11 mm soft, wooden pins), five the firmest. They say nothing about other brands.

    What the brush does

    The large wooden slicker brush from Tauro Pro Line features the largest head in the series at 27 x 10 cm and 25 mm long stainless steel pins. It is built for large dogs with a lot of fur: one stroke across the back covers a wide path, and the long pins reach through the topcoat into the undercoat to remove loose fur and knots. Anyone brushing a Newfoundland, Bernese Mountain Dog, or Leonberger needs this surface area, otherwise grooming takes twice as long.

    Design

    The head is flat and rectangular, the handle made of dark beech wood. The pins are 25 mm long and 0.4 mm thin, set at a 135° angle with an anti-static coating. The cushion underneath is elastic and gives way at the shoulders, hips, and ribs. This brush is the larger alternative to the curved wooden slicker brush when surface area is more important than conforming to the body's contours.

    For whom

    Large and very large dogs from about 25 kg with long or dense fur: Newfoundland, Bernese Mountain Dog, Leonberger, Golden Retriever, Hovawart, Kuvasz, Landseer, large Doodles. The head is too large for small dogs and cats; the rectangular wooden slicker brush in size S or the round brush is better suited for them.

    Application and care

    • On dry or slightly damp fur, preferably with some detangling spray beforehand.
    • Layer by layer: Hold the fur up, brush the bottom layer, then let the next layer fall down.
    • In the direction of growth and without pressure. Long pins scratch the skin if pressed.
    • Tight knots should be pulled apart with your fingers or opened with a dematter.
    • Cleaning: Pull out the hair, wipe with a damp cloth if necessary, and store in a dry place. Do not submerge the wood in water.

    The pins are angled and unground at the tip. They reach under the topcoat, separate the hair and loosen loose undercoat and early knots without cutting.

    The cushion under the pins gives way over bony edges. The pressure spreads out and the skin isn’t scratched, even at the armpits, ribs and hind legs.

    Frequently asked questions

    Which dogs is the head designed for?

    For large and very large dogs from about 25 kg with long or dense coats. On smaller dogs the head covers too much and can’t reach the legs and armpits.

    Large or curved – what is the difference?

    Both have 25 mm pins. The large brush is flat and covers the most area per stroke. The curved one adapts to the body’s contour and spreads the pressure – the better choice for bony dogs or sensitive skin.

    Does the brush scratch the skin?

    Only if you press. The cushion gives way and the brush rests on its own weight. Red skin means too much pressure or pins that are too long for the coat.

    Is it enough during shedding season?

    It removes undercoat and knots. The undercoat rake gets the bulk of the loose undercoat out faster beforehand; afterwards the slicker brush finishes off layer by layer.

    How often?

    Five to ten minutes a day for long coats, thoroughly during shedding season.

    How do I care for the brush?

    Pull out the hair, wipe with a damp cloth if needed and store dry. Do not immerse the wood in water.

    The maker

    It all began with a poodle called Kika

    Kika was the first dog of Janita J. Plungė, the founder of the Kika Group, to which Tauro Pro Line belongs. Her love for Kika became a profession: for over 35 years, Janita has been breeding and grooming Bichons Frisés, Maltese and Pomeranians.

    Because nothing in the salon was good enough for her, she developed her own line. Every brush comes from that hands-on experience.
