Pins and firmness

Two numbers that decide whether a brush suits the coat.

Pin length: 11 · 20 · 25 mm

The length depends on the coat length. Short pins (11 mm) work close to the skin, for short to medium-length coats and detail areas. Medium pins (16 to 22 mm) for medium-length and curly coats. Long pins (25 to 35 mm) reach through dense, long coats into the undercoat.

Firmness: soft or firm

Soft pins bend under pressure: for puppies, thin skin and fine coats. Firm pins hold up under pressure and work their way through dense undercoat. At Tauro Pro Line, the firmness is printed on the packaging as “Pins Solidity”. If in doubt, choose soft.

The bars compare Tauro Pro Line brushes with each other: one bar is the gentlest (11 mm soft, wooden pins), five the firmest. They say nothing about other brands.

For which coat

medium-length to long coats, all sizes. Typical breeds: Poodle, Goldendoodle, Labradoodle, Cocker Spaniel, Golden Retriever, Collie, Maine Coon.

Why this slicker brush
  • Curved head – follows the back, flanks, and legs
  • Three pin lengths: 11, 20, and 25 mm, 135° angle
  • Soft (purple, pink) or hard (turquoise) – the color indicates the firmness
  • Elastic cushion, anti-static, non-slip handle

Which option suits your dog?

The options for this brush, and how to choose.

Size: L (17,5 x 10,6 x 6,2 cm) · S (15,5 x 10,2 x 6,2 cm)

By the dog, not by the amount of coat. S for puppies and dogs up to approx. 10 kg, and for head and legs. L for large dogs and large areas on the back. If in doubt, take the smaller one: it reaches everywhere, it just takes a little longer.

Pin length: 25 mm · 20 mm · 11 mm

By coat length. 11 mm for short to medium-length coats and detail areas. 20 mm for medium-length and curly coats, the standard length for Poodle, Doodle, Coton and Shih Tzu. 25 to 27 mm for long, dense coats with undercoat: Retriever, Collie, Newfoundland. 35 mm only for very long coats, such as Afghan Hounds, Old English Sheepdogs or a show coat.

Hardness: soft (purple) · soft (pink) · hard (turquoise)

Soft for puppies, sensitive skin and fine coats. Firm only for dense undercoat, shedding season and tighter knots. If you only want to buy one brush, go for soft. The colour in brackets is the colour of the brush: at Tauro Pro Line it shows the firmness, purple and pink are soft, turquoise is firm.

    Product description

    What the brush does

A slicker brush is the essential tool for any coat from medium length upwards. The fine, curved stainless steel pins reach beneath the top coat, loosening shed undercoat and beginning tangles, while fluffing up the fur. The result is an airy, voluminous coat free of developing mats. This version is the large professional model from Tauro Pro Line, featuring a curved brush head that groomers use for the back, flanks, and legs.

    The curved head

The brushing surface is outwardly curved, with the cushion underneath being elastic. When drawn across the body, only a portion of the pins makes contact at any one time, allowing the rest to follow the contours. This distributes pressure, prevents scratches on the armpits and hind legs, and makes brushing calmer for the animal. The pins are angled at 135° and are not sharpened at the tips, meaning they separate the hair rather than cutting it.

Soft or hard: The color decides

Tauro Pro Line supplies this brush in two pin firmness levels, distinguished only by the color of the brush body. Purple and pink have soft pins. They bend under pressure and are the right choice for cats, puppies, thin skin, and fine coats. Turquoise has hard pins. They hold their shape under pressure and work through dense undercoat, shedding fur, and firmer tangles. On the packaging, you will find this indicated as "Pins Solidity" with a mark for Soft or Hard.

    Which pin length is right

11 mm for short to medium-length coats, small dogs, cats, and detail areas. 20 mm for medium-length and curly coats, the standard length for Poodles, Doodles, Spaniels, Cotons, and Shih Tzus. 25 mm for long, dense coats with plenty of undercoat: Retrievers, Collies, Newfoundlands, Maine Coons. For the pink version, there is an additional size S with a smaller head for small dogs and cats.

    Application and care

    • On dry or slightly damp fur, preferably with some detangling spray beforehand.
    • In the direction of hair growth, using short strokes, layer by layer from the belly upwards. Do not rub in one spot.
    • Work without pressure. Use only the weight of the brush; keep your wrist loose. Too much pressure irritates the skin, especially with hard pins.
    • Persistent tangles should be teased apart with your fingers or opened with a dematting tool; do not rip through them with the slicker brush.
    • Cleaning: Remove hair by hand or with a comb; wipe clean with a damp cloth if necessary and store in a dry place. Do not submerge in water.

    In short

The large professional slicker brush with a curved head: The curvature follows the body's contour, the flexible cushion distributes pressure, and the bent stainless steel pins remove undercoat and knots without pulling. Three pin lengths for every coat length, and the color indicates the hardness: purple and pink are soft, turquoise is hard.

    A good fit if …

    • your dog has medium to long fur – Poodle, Doodle, Spaniel, Retriever, Collie
    • you are looking for a slicker brush for the whole body, not just for details
    • the fur tends to mat or has an undercoat
    • you want to choose specifically between soft or hard – the color is the deciding factor

Better a different tool if …

    • your dog has short, smooth fur – then a natural bristle or horsehair brush
    • you only want to brush the face, ears, and paws – then the round or mini slicker brush
    • the fur already has solid mats – these should be removed first with a dematter
    • the skin is irritated or injured

    What makes this brush special

    Slicker with curved head
Angled stainless steel pins in the cushion of the slicker brush
    Pins at a 135° angle

The pins are angled and unground at the tip. They reach under the topcoat, separate the hair and loosen loose undercoat and early knots without cutting.

Slicker brush following the body’s shape on the hind leg
    Flexible cushion

The cushion under the pins gives way over bony edges. The pressure spreads out and the skin isn’t scratched, even at the armpits, ribs and hind legs.

Freshly brushed dog with a smooth coat
    Antistatic

The pins are coated, so the coat doesn’t build up static while brushing. No frizz, no flyaways, the coat lies flat after brushing.

    How to brush properly

    Four steps · five minutes

Always on a dry or slightly damp coat, always in the direction of hair growth, always without pressure. Let the brush rest on the coat under its own weight and keep your wrist relaxed.

    Step 1
    Start dry or slightly damp

On a dry or slightly dampened coat, ideally with a little detangling spray. Wet hair stretches and breaks more easily.

Layer by layer AIImage optimised or generated with AI
    Step 2
    Layer by layer

Hold the coat up with your free hand, brush the bottom layer, then let the next one fall. That way the pins reach the skin everywhere.

With the direction of growth, no pressure AIImage optimised or generated with AI
    Step 3
With the direction of growth, no pressure

Short strokes, loose wrist. The brush rests on its own weight – red skin means too much pressure or pins that are too long.

Open knots with your fingers AIImage optimised or generated with AI
    Step 4
    Open knots with your fingers

Tease tight knots apart with your fingers first or open them with a dematting tool. Ripping through them with the slicker brush hurts and breaks the hair.

    Frequently asked questions

Which pin length do I need?

It depends on the coat length. 11 mm for short to medium-length coats, cats and detail areas. 20 mm for medium-length and curly coats – the standard length for Poodles, Doodles, Cotons and Shih Tzus. 25 mm for long, dense coats with undercoat: Retrievers, Collies, Newfoundlands, Maine Coons.

    Soft or firm?

Purple and pink have soft pins, turquoise has firm pins. Soft for cats, puppies, thin skin and fine coats. Firm only for dense undercoat and tighter knots. If in doubt, choose soft.

What is the difference between size S and L?

S (15.5 x 10.2 cm) has the smaller head for small dogs and cats and only comes in pink. L (17.5 x 10.6 cm) is the standard size for medium and large dogs.

Does the brush scratch the skin?

Only if you press. The brush rests on its own weight and the domed head spreads the pressure. If the skin is red after brushing, the pressure was too high or the pins were too long for the coat.

    How often?

Two to three times a week for medium-length coats, five minutes a day for long coats. Thorough and less often is better than superficial every day.

How do I clean the brush?

Pull the hair out by hand or with a comb, wipe with a damp cloth if needed and store dry. Do not immerse in water.

    The maker

It all began with a poodle called Kika

Kika was the first dog of Janita J. Plungė, the founder of the Kika Group, to which Tauro Pro Line belongs. Her love for Kika became a profession: for over 35 years, Janita has been breeding and grooming Bichons Frisés, Maltese and Pomeranians.

Because nothing in the salon was good enough for her, she developed her own line. Every brush comes from that hands-on experience.
