Pins and firmness

Two numbers that decide whether a brush suits the coat.

Pin length: 11 mm

The length depends on the coat length. Short pins (11 mm) work close to the skin, for short to medium-length coats and detail areas. Medium pins (16 to 22 mm) for medium-length and curly coats. Long pins (25 to 35 mm) reach through dense, long coats into the undercoat.

Firmness: soft

Soft pins bend under pressure: for puppies, thin skin and fine coats. Firm pins hold up under pressure and work their way through dense undercoat. At Tauro Pro Line, the firmness is printed on the packaging as “Pins Solidity”. If in doubt, choose soft.

The bars compare Tauro Pro Line brushes with each other: one bar is the gentlest (11 mm soft, wooden pins), five the firmest. They say nothing about other brands.

For which coat

short to medium-length, fine coats, puppies. Typical breeds: Puppy, Cat, Yorkshire Terrier, Maltese, Bichon Frise, Long-haired Chihuahua, Papillon.

    Product description

    What the brush does

The rectangular wooden slicker brush from Tauro Pro Line is the classic slicker shape found in grooming salons: a flat, rectangular head, beechwood handle, and 11 mm short stainless steel pins. The short pins work close to the skin to loosen shed undercoat and tangles in short to medium-length fur without digging in too deep. This makes it the gentlest slicker brush in the range and the top choice for cats, puppies, and dogs with fine fur.

    Wood instead of plastic

The handle is made of hardwood and covered with a rubberized coating. It does not slip even with wet hands and is lightweight at 110 to 130 g. The cushion under the pins is elastic and gives way over bony areas. The pins are set at a 135° angle and have an anti-static coating, preventing the fur from charging up while brushing.

    Which size fits

S (6.8 x 14.8 cm) for cats, puppies, small dogs up to about 10 kg, and detailed areas such as the head and legs. M (9.2 x 17 cm) for medium-sized dogs from around 10 to 25 kg. L (12 x 17.8 cm) for large dogs and large areas on the back. For long, dense fur with a lot of undercoat, the curved wooden slicker brush with 25 mm pins is the better choice.

    Usage and care

    • On dry or slightly damp fur, preferably with a little detangling spray beforehand.
    • In the direction of growth, using short strokes, layer by layer. Do not rub in one spot.
    • Work without pressure. Only use the weight of the brush.
    • Tight tangles should be loosened with your fingers or opened with a dematter.
    • Cleaning: Pull out hairs, wipe clean with a damp cloth if necessary, and store in a dry place. Do not submerge wood in water.

    In short

The classic slicker shape from the grooming salon: flat, rectangular head, hardwood handle with a rubberized coating, 11 mm short stainless steel pins. The short pins work close to the skin and loosen undercoat and tangles in short to medium-length fur without penetrating deeply. The gentlest slicker brush in the series, available in S, M, and L.

    A good fit if …

    • your dog has short to medium-length, fine fur – Yorkshire Terrier, Maltese, Bichon, Papillon
    • you are getting a puppy or a kitten used to being brushed
    • the skin is sensitive and long pins would be too much
    • you are looking for the classic salon shape with a wooden handle

Better a different tool if …

    • the fur is long and dense with plenty of undercoat – then the curved wooden slicker brush with 25 mm
    • your dog has short, smooth fur – then a natural bristle or horsehair brush
    • the fur already has solid mats – these are first loosened by a detangler
    • the skin is irritated or injured

    What makes this brush special

    Wooden slicker, flat head, S/M/L
Angled stainless steel pins in the cushion of the slicker brush
    Pins at a 135° angle

The pins are angled and unground at the tip. They reach under the topcoat, separate the hair and loosen loose undercoat and early knots without cutting.

Slicker brush following the body’s shape on the hind leg
    Flexible cushion

The cushion under the pins gives way over bony edges. The pressure spreads out and the skin isn’t scratched, even at the armpits, ribs and hind legs.

Freshly brushed dog with a smooth coat
    Antistatic

The pins are coated, so the coat doesn’t build up static while brushing. No frizz, no flyaways, the coat lies flat after brushing.

    How to brush properly

    Four steps · five minutes

Always on a dry or slightly damp coat, always in the direction of hair growth, always without pressure. Let the brush rest on the coat under its own weight and keep your wrist relaxed.

    Step 1
    Start dry or slightly damp

On a dry or slightly dampened coat, ideally with a little detangling spray. Wet hair stretches and breaks more easily.

Short strokes, layer by layer AIImage optimised or generated with AI
    Step 2
    Short strokes, layer by layer

Hold the coat up with your free hand, brush the bottom layer, then let the next one fall. Don’t rub in one spot.

Just the weight of the brush AIImage optimised or generated with AI
    Step 3
Just the weight of the brush

Work without pressure. The short pins sit close to the skin – with pressure they scratch, without pressure they detangle.

Open knots with your fingers AIImage optimised or generated with AI
    Step 4
    Open knots with your fingers

Tease tight knots apart with your fingers first or open them with a dematting tool – don’t rip through them with the slicker brush.

    Frequently asked questions

    Which size do I need?

S (6.8 x 14.8 cm) for cats, puppies, dogs up to about 10 kg and for the head and legs. M (9.2 x 17 cm) for medium-sized dogs of around 10 to 25 kg. L (12 x 17.8 cm) for large dogs and large areas of the back.

    Why only 11 mm pins?

Short pins work close to the skin and don’t go deep. That is exactly right for fine, short to medium-length coats and the gentlest choice for puppies and cats. For long, dense coats you need 25 mm – the curved wooden slicker brush.

    Purple or turquoise?

Purely a matter of taste. Both colours have the same soft 11 mm pins.

Does the brush scratch the skin?

Only if you press. The cushion gives way over bony edges and the brush rests on its own weight. Red skin means too much pressure.

    How often?

Two to three times a week; with puppies, briefly every day to get them used to it.

How do I care for the brush?

Pull out the hair, wipe with a damp cloth if needed and store dry. Do not immerse the wood in water.

    The maker

It all began with a poodle called Kika

Kika was the first dog of Janita J. Plungė, the founder of the Kika Group, to which Tauro Pro Line belongs. Her love for Kika became a profession: for over 35 years, Janita has been breeding and grooming Bichons Frisés, Maltese and Pomeranians.

Because nothing in the salon was good enough for her, she developed her own line. Every brush comes from that hands-on experience.

    Nice!

It took a while to get used to it (my cat would try to bite it), but now my cat lets me groom him and even closes his eyes while I'm grooming his fur. Not yet for long, but we're getting there!
