What the firmness level means

Firmer is not automatically better. The firmness says how deep the brush reaches into the coat – and that depends on your dog's coat.

Soft Gold Brush – fine, short, soft coat
Medium Green Brush – short to medium-length hair, soft, fine coat
Firm Purple Brush – thick, coarse, woolly coat, undercoat (this page)
Firm Silver Brush – double coat, dense undercoat
Extremely firm Mat Zapper (Red) – matted, knotted coat – any coat type
Why this brush
  • Reaches the skin without scratching
  • Removes loose undercoat
  • Untangles knots before matting occurs
  • Flexible head follows body contours

Which size fits?

The same brush, just narrow or wide. Many with a big dog take both.

Single · 4.5 cm

Dogs up to approx. 20 kg. And on every dog for face, paws, legs and tight spots.

Wide · 9 cm

Dogs from approx. 20 kg and all large areas: back, flanks, tail.

    In short

The Purple Brush is Les Poochs' firm everyday brush – made for dogs with thick, coarse, or woolly coats and for all dogs with an undercoat. It penetrates through the topcoat down to the skin, removing loose undercoat and nascent mats without pulling.

A good fit if your dog …

    • has a thick, coarse or woolly coat
    • has an undercoat or a double coat
    • is a Doodle – Goldendoodle, Labradoodle and all mixes
    • tends to mat because the brush has not yet reached the skin

Better a different one if …

    • your dog has very fine, thin fur – then the Green Brush is a better fit
    • you are looking for a first, particularly gentle brush for a puppy – then take the Gold Brush
    • the fur is already severely matted – then you first need the Mat Zapper

    How to brush correctly

Four steps · takes less than five minutes

The flexible head does the work, not your strength. Working without pressure gets you deeper into the coat and keeps your dog relaxed.

Work towards the tail – always in the direction of the handle, never sideways.

Do not chop into the coat and do not stay in one spot.

Ears, armpits and inner thighs – knots form there first.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the Purple Brush too hard for my dog?

It is the firm version of the Pro Brush, made to get through a dense coat. The bristle tips are rounded, so they do not scratch – but for a very fine or thin coat the Green Brush is the better choice.

What is the difference to the Silver Brush?

The Purple Brush is the everyday brush. The Silver Brush has twice as many bristles and is built for shedding season – it pulls out far more loose undercoat. Many Doodle and Husky owners use both.

    Is it good for Doodles?

Yes. The curly, dense Doodle coat is exactly what this brush was developed for. The manufacturer names Goldendoodle, Labradoodle and all Doodle crosses explicitly.

    Can I use it daily?

Yes. Short daily brushing is far more pleasant for your dog than one long session a week.
